In the summer of 2023, a new science-oriented upper secondary school was completed in Helsinki. The five-story building accommodates up to 900 students, and its location on Kumpula Campus allows even closer collaboration between the University of Helsinki and the school.
The teaching in Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Natural Sciences focuses on biology, physics, chemistry and geography, as well as a general programme.
The design of the new facilities aimed at creating a safe, healthy, and flexible learning environment. Wood – a sustainable and environmentally friendly choice from a climate perspective – was extensively used as a building and interior decoration material.
The flexibility of the spaces was taken into account in the furnishing of the science classrooms. Ecological values are reflected in the choice of materials, which are healthy and durable. The carefully designed and realised workstations were built to last, and provide the best possible environment for experiments and learning.
The OPPILab furniture, based on the VISULab laboratory furniture range, has been designed to withstand demanding use for decades.
The OPPILab fume cupboards provide the laboratory users with safe conditions for work. The OPPILab Study workbenches are on the right in the picture, and on their left is the mobile fume cupboard OPPILab Teach Pro. Thanks to its transparent sides and back panel, teaching or student work can be easily observed from around the fume cupboard. A flexible ventilation connection and casters allow the fume cupboard to be moved to the desired spot in the classroom.

The teacher’s desk can be equipped with, for example, a water tap and a sink, a safety control panel, and various under-desk cabinet solutions. The desk is also available with electrical height adjustment. In the pictured model, there is an additional fold-down side to provide larger work surface.
The worktop material is acid-resistant solid laminate, which was also used in the other workstations throughout the facility.
The entire science learning environment, including the teachers’ preparation rooms and storage areas, can be designed using the OPPILab furniture. The product range is fully adaptable to meet the specific requirements and needs of each facility.
