Kemira, EriCa Green Chemistry Park, Espoo

Espoo’s Finnoo district saw the completion of the Erica Green Chemistry Park in autumn 2025. The park offers state‑of‑the‑art facilities for chemical research and development and brings together industry leaders, startups, and research institutions. The benefits of Visu Kaluste’s innovative Greenline+ solutions have already become evident in Kemira’s daily operations.

Kemira serves as the main user of the EriCa Green Chemistry Park, having established its new research center in the building. The center continues Kemira’s more than 50‑year tradition of research and development in Espoo’s Finnoo area. High‑quality laboratory spaces are also available for lease to other chemical research companies. This unique business and science hub forms a new center for green chemistry and sustainable development expertise right in the heart of Espoo.

Visu Kaluste Oy was selected to supply the furnishings and fume cupboards for more than 10,000 m² of laboratory space. The furniture solutions were designed in close cooperation with the users, and entirely new innovations were developed to meet the special requirements of the facilities. The design emphasized adaptability, safety, environmental friendliness and energy efficiency.

“The cooperation with Visu went excellently. The schedule was maintained, and the details were reviewed thoroughly.”

Flexible collaboration and customized solutions

The laboratory facilities at EriCa form an extensive entity that includes customized solutions in both furnishings and, each individually equipped for its specific purpose. The delivery also included chemical storage solutions and local exhaust systems.

Visu Kaluste offers responsible products in a Finnish-made quality. Guaranteed quality and decades worth of experience in manufacturing laboratory furniture ensured that the facilities meet both sustainable development principles and the requirements of high‑quality research work. Visu Kaluste managed the entire delivery chain from design to implementation and installation, ensuring consistent quality and smooth collaboration throughout every phase of the project.

One of the site’s key features is the modularity of the furnishings. The system is easily adaptable and can be configured into a wide range of furniture solutions according to specific needs. Every shelf can be moved, removed, or replaced with a fixed or electrically adjustable option. The upper cabinets can also be removed together with their frames from the center of a furniture group. The under-desk cabinets can be smoothly repositioned as needed, and they can be removed or transferred to another group.

The clean, streamlined surfaces enable easy maintenance and high‑level hygiene. The technical enclosure reduces the number of areas that require cleaning. The under-desk cabinets are elevated from the floor, which enhances the visual appearance of the space and simplifies cleaning.

Special attention has been paid to the integration of building technology. Technical components are placed inside enclosed sections within the furniture frame, while still remaining easily serviceable yet. Power outlets and user device cables are hidden in the central installation zone, keeping cables off the work surfaces. The socket units are conveniently accessible through hatches located in the installation channel.

New Greenline+ improves daily operations

The site utilizes Visu Kaluste’s new innovation, Greenline+, which revolutionizes the energy efficiency of fume cupboards and sets user safety to a completely new level.

The core idea of the system is to guide and direct the user to the correct the operation of the fume cupboard sash intuitively without special training or reminders. Learning happens along with use. The direct benefits are improved user safety and energy saving, which start immediately and are permanent. The glowing color light guide is visible to the user in the side profile of the fume cupboard.

Lillandt also praises Visu’s Greenline+ system.

“Visu’s new Greenline+ solution is a highly advanced system that ensures user safety. It was great to be involved in developing the products together. The final result was achieved through genuine dialogue, and the solutions were refined to function optimally in our laboratory environment.”
Marcus Lillandt, Kemira

The system consists of three main components: AutoClose, VisualGuide and the New User Panel, as well as their intelligent integration into the VISU fume cupboard and the Fanison adjustment system.

AutoClose

The sash of the fume cupboard closes automatically when the fume cupboard is not in use. In this case, energy is saved, as the air flow of the sash opening is correspondingly reduced. The AutoClose function starts based on the presence sensor, and the delay of the function is adjustable. The user can disable the feature if desired. The sash is equipped with a sensor that detects an obstacle, so automatic descent does not cause danger to the user. The sash is operated by hand, and due to the innovative structure, this is particularly light and pleasant.

VisualGuide

The vertical sliding profile of the fume cupboard has informative visual guidance, which increases user safety and guides the user to save energy. When moving the fume cupboard sash, the side light guides the user to place the sash to a safe level. The system is intelligent and can predict the adequacy of the air flow and refine the estimate based on possible changes.

The benefits of the Greenline+ system, especially its ability to balance the use of multiple fume cupboards within the same space, have already become evident in Kemira’s day‑to‑day operations.

“I particularly appreciate the way Greenline+ balances the use of fume cupboards within the same space. It helps users understand how many fume cupboards can be operated simultaneously, and this has already had a concrete impact in our everyday work.”
